She was reported missing in November 2016 after failing to come home after running near her house in Northern California. She lied to authorities about being kidnapped and tortured by two disguised Spanish women, locked in a closet, and branded with a hot object.

In 2020, police utilised genetic genealogy technology to analyse unidentified male DNA found on things she was wearing, bringing the inquiry to a close.

After the DNA was traced to a family member of the victim, investigators took DNA from Papini's ex-boyfriend to corroborate his identify.  According to the leaked statement, the ex-boyfriend admitted to investigators that he helped Papini "ran away" by concealing her at his house in Southern California.
